Pixel artist Waneella (@waneella) specializes in futuristic cityscapes with an anime influence. Her moody, muted color palette, empty streets and abandoned places feel eerily appropriate as we try to re-imagine life in the new normal.⁣

“I want people to give a bit of attention to the surroundings of their life,” says the Russian artist, who works in animation and game development. “Even if we used to call urbanization ‘modern evil’ and it isn’t very popular now, it’s just our new reality, a new environment. And it’s essential to find beauty in it to continue to live and have a mentally healthy life.”⁣

While in film school, Waneella started her pixel art journey, creating looping GIFs as a way to relax from academic drawings. Since February 2019, she’s worked with E.Sanchillo, who writes music for her videos. “This collaboration was made to expand the boundaries and make our animations like a portal to another world with its own atmosphere,” she says.⁣
