Dog. My head musta been in the sand this week. How did I not know Frank Rocco Prestia of #TowerOfPower passed away?!—-I mean I get it, my entire record collection of my childhood is slowly fading away as many of those people are approaching their 70s/80s/90s so yeah life moves on. But it does upset me that this year especially so many people are perishing as an afterthought because death has been normalized in ways we couldn’t imagine.

@chrmcbride (one of the greatest living jazz creatives with us now) put me on to Rocco back in high school. My dad had some of the albums but a lot of his collection didn’t wake up and grab me til hip hop. When we speak of funk bass playing there are Thumb disciples (Team Larry Graham) & IndexMiddle disciples (Team James Jamerson) Thumbs cats were cool, downright mind blowing (check out bassist #KeithHatchell’s WTFkry magic on #BillWithers “YouGotTheStuff” & ESPECIALLY the @ビッグ・ショーン sampled “Say You Love Me On More Time” by (just finding out recently passed away w zero fanfare 😖😖😖) #DjRogers—-prolly the most unpraised thump magic I’ve heard in the last 50)—-but I found it way more impressive if you got my attention in a subtle way (google: Paul McCartney James Jamerson Intro & the payoff at :17 to :34 is manna from heaven)

Lemme not get rabbit holed in telling y’all why this is a devastating loss in the world of soul. Rocco’s marksman like precision in playing the right ghost note and NOT getting in the way is a work of art man. That’s why I opted to loop my favorite of a gazillion favorite basslines of his #TheresOnlySoMuchOilInTheGround is a great example. There were a handful that could pull the trick off of being quiet as a mouse while yelling “LOOK AT ME!!!” at the same time (Jamerson, James era Bootsy, Jaco’s soul work pre Weather Report (I guess Weather Report too lol) & even Sly’s sloppy way on Riot & Fresh trying to forge a new path w/o Larry, & can’t forget Chuck Rainey (name it: “Rock Steady” “Dancing Machine” “Sanford & Son” “Think Twice” “Harlem River Drive” “Black Cow” “After The Dance” I can go on)—but man: listen to classic @towerofpowerofficialband & give that man his respect.
