On October 20 around 7 p.m., security cameras were reported to have been removed from the toll gate and surrounding lights turned off, when the Nigerian military showed up and started shooting into the crowd. A number of protesters were injured and killed. Earlier in the day, an impromptu 24-hour curfew had been announced, stating the move was an attempt to arrest “criminals and miscreants hiding under the umbrella of these protests.“ Protesters remained at the toll gate, singing the national anthem and waving green and white flags.
