San Francisco's Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a new bill designed to end false, racially motivated 911 calls. It's called the Caution Against Racial and Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act, or CAREN Act for short — a pun on the concept of a 'Karen,' a white woman who calls the cops on Black people for trifling reasons.⁠

The act's passage comes after a number of high-profile incidents in recent months that involved false and/or racist 911 calls, perhaps most notably a white woman named Amy Cooper calling the police on Christian Cooper, a Black bird-watcher in NYC's Central Park. '911 calls are not customer service for people’s racism,' Shamann Walton, a member of San Francisco's board, tweeted on Tuesday.
