Every year on December 12th, Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Feast Day, millions of pilgrims visit the site where the Virgin Mary purportedly appeared to an indigenous man on a hilltop, leaving an imprinted image on his cloak that is on display today. Our Lady of Guadalupe has become one of the most important symbols in Mexico where her image has been used to represent everything from faith, identity, motherhood and social justice. This year, the Basilica will remain closed to the public on Feast Day to avoid large crowds gathering in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 which has claimed approximately 110,000 victims in the country. Instead, the Archdiocese of Mexico has organized a virtual pilgrimage and has launched a campaign called “Pilgrims stay home.” Despite warnings, thousands of devotees arrived ahead of its closure showing an act of faith and devotion that not even the pandemic can stop.
