Show of hands 🙋‍♀️🙋🏽‍♂️ - how many of you have heard of or tried breathwork?

I attended my first breathwork session just hours after receiving my cancer diagnosis. This was purely coincidence; I had been curious about breathwork for years after hearing many friends talk about it as an effective emotional processing and stress reduction tool.

What transpired that session eluded both my rational mind and working vocabulary. If you’ve experienced unordinary states of consciousness, like the kind brought on by entheogens, you know what I’m talking about.

I was transported through time and space, memories and people. As the music swelled - breathwork is often done in conjunction with sound baths or emotive songs - my body shook and convulsed. But unlike other transcendent experiences, I hadn’t ingested a single psychedelic. I was just...breathing.

Had anyone seen me on the floor writhing and at times sobbing, they would have thought I was possessed. But by the end, I felt immense peace throughout my entire body. My anxiety was gone.

From then on, I incorporated breathwork into my cancer treatment, with no good reason other than the personal observation that it felt good. Whenever I wasn’t sick, I did a session. (I would later do more empirical research around the impact of breathwork on the brain…more on that in a subsequent post.)

I’ve since worked with over a dozen breathwork practitioners, many of whom I credit with profound, life-changing experiences. I share a handful of them here, in hopes that, if you are curious, you can experience an in-person or virtual session with them.

1. @jordanaisyoga - her soothing style always leaves me feeling joyful & relaxed
2. @suntaramusic - he and his wife offer a gentle breathwork style combined with beautiful sound healing
3. @becrystalclear_ - where I had my first powerful session and subsequent sessions throughout treatment
4. Dr. Anne West - drannewest.net - one session with Anne at her home in Napa changed my life

As we all ease into 2021, I’ll be sharing more tools that have aided my healing journey this past year. From traditional practices to modern technology, I hope you find them productive.
