Most of the people I know feel inconfortable in front of a real traditional African masks. They have a strange feeling they will express by saying (it scares them, the lines are too strong). I can’t blame them, those masks are particularly charged with energy. What is being called masks is actually just one part of a costume and most of them represent and celebrate the ancestors spirits or the forest spirits. The masks representing the spirits are often exhibited as part of rites which often serve - directly or indirectly - to mark, but also to promote, the change of status of an individual or a small group. These rites of passage are performed during major stages of life: birth, maturity, marriage, rise in the hierarchy, funerals.
