I’ve been in this community for over two decades - so I’m deciding to share some of the things I’ve heard over the years from athletes, other coaches and parents. Trigger warning: these are true statements & I plan to dig into the problem of each one in the coming posts. “My cousin said that his coach gave him and his teammates the goal of losing weight during thanksgiving week.” This statement came from a 7 year old that I used to coach here in Colorado...his cousin was around the same age. “She’s definitely gained weight recently - she needs to lose like 10-15 pounds so she can perform better.” Said another coach to me regarding his female athlete who was around 15-16 years old and who likely had recently begun puberty. “The female Junior Youth category is just weak. They go off to college and gain weight and then boom, they can’t climb hard anymore.” “I know she doesn’t tend to eat so we put a 1000 calorie minimum on her for her training days.” This is from a parent of a 14 year old competitive climber. The 14 year old girl says, “Yea, I usually don’t even eat that many calories. I’m afraid of getting fat so even if I do eat that much I will usually go throw it up.” “She’s a bit heavier than other girls in the same age category so we’ve got to make sure her weight is controlled.” Said a parent of a competitive youth athlete. “I didn’t believe you when you said my daughter was rapidly losing weight, but then I paid more attention and saw it myself. She’s only eating a couple pieces of steamed broccoli for dinner.” “My daughter is eating just fine. She puts protein powder in her coffee before school. She’s fine,” said a father of a girl I used to coach. Later I found out that he too had been struggling with ED for many years. 😭it’s heart breaking.」2月18日 2時31分 - chelseanicholerude
