Thinking back to a year ago today (what a year it has been) and I remember the amazing women that I meet as part of a portfolio of portraits for @ナショナルジオグラフィック pictures were part of a cover article in June of 2020. The article ran as the 75th anniversary of the end of the War.
Maria Rokhlina, 95, was a Soviet Combat medic, who traveled from Stalingrad to Berlin. "We had to warm each other with our bodies, we took an oath never to forget...never to forget Stalingrad and those hugging each other in 'Warming circles'.
Vera Nikitina, 87, was a child during the 872-day long blockade of Leningrad, Russia. She lost her mother and father shortly after the war started. Nearly all her relatives could not escape the death grip that the Nazis had on the city.
"I don't want to remember any of it, even to speak of it. It's all so hard....I want to live the rest of my life in peace."
