This post is in honor of Mr. Lawerence Brooks for Black History Month. The oldest living veteran of World War II, Brooks credits a healthy diet, loving people, and the Lord for his longevity. He told me that "long life is all about love, no matter what."
My portrait of Mr. Brooks which ran on the June cover of @ナショナルジオグラフィック was shot one year ago today. He is one of 300,000 living U.S. veterans of World War II.
Brooks served in the mostly African American 91st Engineering Battalion in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines, working as a cook and valet. He was among 1.2 million black World War II soldiers. Many of those soldiers faced the challenges of the Jim Crow South when they returned home. That included being treated as a second-class citizen and not being allowed to vote.
In 2005, Brooks survived the storm...“Hurricane Katrina took everything I owned, washed away everything,” he said last year. As a 95-year-old he and his wife wadded & swam in chest-high water to their church, climbed to the roof and were evacuated by helicopter from their home.
Still, Brooks is upbeat and very mobile. While working on a portrait in his home, I left a case in his room, he picked it up and walked it to the door so that I would not forget it. Bravo Mr. Brooks, a life well lived
