Here comes the Millais clan for this #childrensday 🎏 Today’s #TheNationalMuseumofWesternArtTokyo (NMWA) post features this newly acquired work by Millais of his four children—Effie, Everett, Mary and George from left to right—playing underneath the grand piano at his Palace Gate house.
As a father of eight children, the artist frequently drew his sons and daughters as readily available models and their portraits brought success and fame to him as children portraitist and ‘fancy picture’ artist.

This work is not only significant as the earliest example of group portrait of his children in Millais’ career but also important for the NMWA as it once belonged to Kōjirō Matsukata, whose collection of arts became the foundation of the museum.

#こどもの日 に国立西洋美術館アカウントでご紹介するのは、2020年度新収蔵のミレイ作品。
妻エフィとの間に8人の子供を授かったミレイは、最も手近なモデルとして子供たちを頻繁に描いたことで知られています。
本作に描かれているのは長女エフィ、長男エヴァレット、次女メアリー、そして次男ジョージ。パレスゲートの邸宅で画家のアトリエに置かれていたグランドピアノの下で、自由に遊ぶ子供たちの姿です。

本作はやがて子供の肖像画家・ファンシーピクチャーの画家として人気を博すミレイの画業にとって重要な位置をしめるだけでなく、所蔵館の国立西洋美術館の歴史にとっても大切な作品で、美術館の礎であるコレクション創始者である松方幸次郎によって一時期所有されていたことが確認されています。
