I love Thailand. Time and again, I have been inspired and comforted by the warmth and friendliness of the people of Thailand, the “Land of Smiles.” Toyota was hit hard by the 1997 Asian financial crisis, but we managed to stick to our commitment of not laying off a single employee. Seeking to boost employment, even His Majesty, King Rama 9 ordered a Soluna, Toyota’s first model designed and manufactured locally for Thailand. Then in 2010, when Toyota faced recall issues, I was required to testify before congress in the United States. During this very difficult period when many cast doubts on the company, His Majesty was also the first global leader to express trust in Toyota.
