Research with the Dove Self-Esteem Project showed that 60% of girls feel upset when their real appearance doesn’t match the online version of themselves. In fact, women who spent just 10 minutes taking, editing and posting selfies to social media reported feeling more anxious, less confident and less physically attractive than those who didn’t engage.

As a former content creator, one part of me loves to see all the incredible AI filmmaking tools that enable creativity (ie the ability to play different characters without needing special makeup or costumes!) I can also appreciate that putting on makeup and doing hair to be in front of a camera is time consuming and… well, chemically toxic. But when filters subtly distort facial features toward what an AI has determined matches a certain standard of beauty, self-esteem erodes as well.

I feel like the old lady now, grateful that I lived through a content creation generation that didn’t have these tools…. But I am really concerned for young women.

What will be the outcome of a generation growing up these tools? What will they do when confronted with aging?
