But one thing that has captivated my passion and attention for the better part of two years now is my work with @blackrockneuro. Watching someone with paralysis learn to type or draw with their mind…or “feel” an object through a robotic hand...it’s jaw-dropping. While most people have heard of Neuralink (Elon Musk’s co) and are somewhat aware of the possibilities of brain-computer interfaces, fewer people realize that these devices already exist and are restoring touch, communication and mobility in humans with paralysis and other neurological disorders. Our 34+ human research participants, aka “BCI Pioneers,” live on the edge of science and possibility. With Blackrock’s implantable tech, these individuals are able to type, browse the internet, play video games, even create art— simply by thinking. I first met the founders in 2017, as I was putting together the first pieces of my documentary on BCIs. We forged a friendship, and when they hit a high growth phase in 2021, they convinced me to come on board the company. Fast forward 18 months….I remain awe-inspired by what we’re doing and what’s on deck for the next few years. I’m so proud of this dream team, and the scientists and engineers who show up everyday with the drive to get our devices out of the lab and into the hands of those who need it most in 2023.
