🕯️ Remembering Funmilayo Kuti, revolutionary feminist and activist, who died #onthisday in 1977.

In "Yo Mama" (2003), Wangechi Mutu reimagines the life and death of Funmilayo Kuti, seen here crushing a serpent with the stilletto heel of her shoe. Kuti—the mother of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti—was an activist who dedicated her life to empowering women and the impoverished in Lagos. Her son was greatly influenced by her political beliefs and also became an outspoken critic of the Nigerian government. In 1977, when Nigerian soldiers invaded and burned Kuti’s home, his mother was thrown from the building and killed.

Mutu originally created this work for “Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti,” the 2003 New Museum exhibition inspired by the life of Funmilayo Kuti's son.
