Lagerfeld’s beloved pet cat, Choupette, wasn’t there, but Jared Leto and Doja Cat saw to it that felines were represented on the carpet. In a nod to some of Lagerfeld’s most enduring design themes, there were plenty of pearls and flowers on the carpet. Kim Kardashian arrived in a pearls-and-not-much-else look by Schiaparelli, and Rihanna, who arrived very late, wore a white Valentino gown and a hooded camellia cape. ASAP Rocky’s look was very Karl-coded, with a black glove and white collared shirt, and Jessica Chastain wore giant black sunglasses framed by a blond wig that mirrored Lagerfeld’s signature hairdo. Black and white looks were dominant on the carpet, though stars including Pedro Pascal and Viola Davis stood out with pops of color. There were a variety of statement headpieces or, in the case of Lil Nas X, a silver face mask with glittering whiskers. This year’s gala and show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, called “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” were homages to the imagination and creativity of Lagerfeld, the longtime designer of Chanel, Fendi and his own line. Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue and the gala’s chief mastermind who was one of Lagerfeld’s closest friends, said she hoped the designer “would understand how many people love and respect him.” Tap the link in our bio to see a full roundup of the best looks from the Met Gala.
