I went to see Terry Semel who ran Warner’s at the time and he said he liked my idea but they already gave it to ProducerJerry Weintraub but would send me over to his office to meet him. Jerry was the perfect producer for an Oceans remake because he knew Sinatra personally. He was already trying to develop a version but wasn’t having any success. I went to Jerry’s office and passionately pitched my take. He loved it and agreed to hire me in the room. I told him my ideas for casting and said I had just seen a film of a great writer I wanted to work with named Ted Griffin who wrote Ravenous who could do a page 1 rewrite. Whilst Ted finished his draft I happen to have a general meeting with George Clooney in the valley to talk about the part that Nicolas Cage ended up with in Family Man. I could tell George wanted the part but I had my mind set on Cage so I pitched Oceans hoping that he would be more interested in that then the Family Man. George thought it was a horrible idea and said Oceans should never be remade because it was a masterpiece. I didn’t agree. It was a good idea for a movie but definitely flawed. When the script came in for Oceans I loved it but I had one big problem…..Rush Hour 2 script came in at the same time and Jerry wanted to go right away and I just couldn’t walk away from my own Rush Hour franchise. So I asked him to wait until I finished RH 2 and he said “Sorry Kid, I’m not getting any younger” A week later I got a call from Steven Soderbergh who said he had just come on board to direct Ocean’s and thanked me for the great script but wanted a favor. Would I possibly take my name off the film as Executive Producer because Jerry was refusing to have any more producers on the film and Steven’s line producer should be getting a credit? The second image is Ted’s script with some of my handwritten casting ideas. Clooney ended up doing the film with Soderbergh, Ted deservingly got sole writer credit, I took my name off… and the rest is history! This photo is from the Oceans Premiere!」5月2日 21時21分 - brettrat
