Photos by @kiliiiyuyan | In a submarine canyon off Kaikoura, New Zealand, dusky dolphins play with a piece of kelp, passing it among each other using their noses. I couldn’t help but be reminded of my grandmother’s Indigenous stories that related how seals and dolphins were people who could transform into animals. The waters off Kaikoura are rich with life, and it’s no accident. Both the Ngati Kuri Maori and the New Zealand settlers have tended this marine environment.
