Video by @edkashi | I chose this spot in a stairwell at a mosque in Varanasi, India, to capture the reverie of daily life near the sacred Ganges River, just steps away and used for daily ablutions and Hindu rituals. This historic city is known as the place where Buddha gave his first sermons and as the most holy to Hindus, who come here when they are near death or who are brought to be cremated on funeral pyres next to the river. It’s said that being cremated in Varanasi and having one’s ashes rest in the Ganges ends the cycle of reincarnation and brings salvation.

Workers, tourists, families, schoolchildren, dogs, bulls, cows, women in beautiful saris, sadhus, and religious pilgrims, and others come and go, representing the gamut of life. It’s fascinating to observe—some slouch while others glide through the air with grace. Some pass by with their heads down, carrying the troubles of the world on their shoulders. Some flash a beautiful smile when they notice the camera.

It’s rare that I work from a fixed position, and I learned a lot about the power of observation and the visual magic of staying put. A photographer usually moves around a lot, looking for different angles, always searching for that best shot to tell a story. It was liberating to be still for once and let the world move around me and my camera.
