I was in a grandmotherly mood (whatever that means) so wearing a quilt felt just right. The coffee house was percolating with sound; business meetings, study groups, friends just catching up. It felt good to be out of what has been a very cloistered life of caregiving for a young baby and the caregiving that makes a book. A woman approaches and says how much she loves this coat. To her I am an anonymous woman with a very cool coat. We chat. She’s attending FIT and shares her concern that approaching 40 makes her maybe too old for a career in fashion. She’s not the first woman to fear that she is too old for something, to take a risk, to reinvent. I LIVE for moments like these when I can pull out my Instagram and say, “Well let me show you what happened to me when I was 61!” The moment I can change someone’s perception about what it can mean to be old. This is really what my book is about, sharing the remarkable adventure I had during the last 10 years of my life.
