The Secret Shed.

My favorite book as a child was,”The Secret Garden”. I found such hope in it. A place that had become dormant through neglect triggered by loss could, with a small amount of care, regenerate, recover and be renewed.

To mark the occasion of my 70th birthday next month, Calvin has built me a shed. It feels like a secret because it stands at the far edge of our yard almost hidden underneath the sweeping branches of several different types of trees. Over time as the cedar wood turns grey, it will blend even more effortlessly into the landscape. It lays somewhere between a public and private space.

I’ve always been fascinated with the places where women create. Writers, artists, sewers, craft women of all kinds. I love to see what objects they keep near, how they decorate or not, what hangs on the walls and how close or far from nature these structures seem to be. I try to determine, like the clothes they wear, what their personal spaces may say about them.

I don’t know yet what I will create here. Calvin has provided me with an ample workspace and shelves to contain my little library. At the moment, it holds books about clothing and affect, writing from photographs, herbs and roses, needlecraft and mending. I wonder what I’ll make of them all. How they will co-mingle in my brain to produce new ideas. How they will help me to give expression to my creativity in this new decade of life. In my 60s my blog, clothes and journey into the world of fashion was what I did. It’s time for something that reconfigures, regenerates, and reinvents all the experiences I had during the last decade and makes them right for this one.

So I’ll be sending dispatches from the Secret Shed, will take photos there and share what I think about, write about and what I do there as I head into my next “What Now”

I could not have asked for a better birthday present than this lovingly made and given one by the man who knows me so well. I remain aware of how much privilege is mine. I am grateful.

What’s your creative space like? Even if you just hold it in your mind.
