When Toshiko Takaezu was creating large sculptures in the 1970s, some taller than she was, other artists expressed shock that a woman could make such big artworks.

Takaezu was a trailblazer in ceramic art, best known for her closed-vessel sculptures. She merged aspects of Japanese tea ceremony, calligraphy and American Abstract Expressionism to create a new style from these art traditions.

This 1974 photo of Takaezu is included in her papers in our @archivesamerart. Swipe to see her "Closed Form"—porcelain and glaze, ca. 1980s or 1990s—in our @americanart's collection. #AANHPI
