We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of designer and auto dealer, William F ‘Bill’ Buckle (1926-2023).

Buckle Motors was established in 1927 by Bill’s father, William G Buckle. Bill spent his early years involved in various forms of motorsport in Australia and the UK. He joined the family business following his own father’s passing, when Bill was just 19 years of age.

In the 1950s, Bill began experimenting with the design and construction of fibreglass-bodied sports cars. He travelled to Bavaria and obtained the rights to produce fibreglass bodies for Goggomobil cars in Australia. His first design was the Goggomobil Coupe, a small car that appealed to people’s desire to travel and explore, affordably, in the post-war era. Building on the Coupe’s success, Bill then designed the Goggomobil Dart, two-seater, doorless sports car, with an innovative body design fabricated from just two fibreglass parts. Both were instant successes with the Australian public.

In 2021 the Powerhouse was fortunate to collaborate with Bill Buckle on the Microcars exhibition, for which he loaned two cars, a Coupe and a Dart, from his private collection. In an interview recorded for the exhibition, Bill spoke with passion about designing and manufacturing these innovative little cars.
