At the very heart of British rural, cultural and political life, Duchess Deborah was introduced to Lucian Freud when he was a guest at Edensor House (close to Chatsworth) for a weekend in August 1957. She wrote afterwards to her sister Diana that the artist had been “very nice & not at all wicked...”—an introduction that preceded a life-long friendship. Coinciding with the re-opening of the #NationalPortraitGallery in London on 22 June, and forming part of their Portrait Mode programme, this summer #SothebysLondon will host a celebration of portraiture with a season of exhibitions and events.
