Edward gory picture books for adults"The Hapless Child"
Briefly, a girl living in a wealthy family loses her father, is bullied at school, is kidnapped by a stranger, loses her eye, and is hit by a car. And she finally... I felt like I was watching a dark, silent black-and-white film, and I couldn't help but be fascinated by Edward Gorey's signature fine lines. An Australian jazz trumpet player named Michael Mantler has released a song titled "The Hapless Child" that follows this picture book, and when I listened to it, I felt lonely.
It's a little creepier than the pre-established harmony story, but the pictures are cute and I was attracted to the part that has some sense of reality.

エドワード・ゴリーの大人向け絵本「不幸な子供」
裕福な家庭に住んでいる少女は、父を失い、学校ではいじめられ、知らない人に拐われ、失目をし、車に撥ねられてしまうなど。かなりざっくり内容を説明すると、救いようのない不幸が少女に付き纏う物語。そして最後には....。ダークなサイレントのモノクロ映画を観ている気分になり、エドワード・ゴーリーの特徴である細かい線で描かれている絵には思わず釘付け。マイケル・マントラーと言うオーストラリアのジャズトランペット奏者が、この絵本に沿った「不幸な子供」をタイトルにした曲を出しているが、それを聴いたら何とも言えない気持ちになった。
予定調和に進むストーリーより、少し不気味だけど、絵は可愛らしくて、どこかリアリティがある部分に惹かれる。
