HAMMERSMITH ’73 - WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY

“You’ll lose me though I’m always really free…”

Were you there on THAT night 50 years ago? Will Ian Ever is one of the fans who has kindly shared his memories with us of the night Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust at the Hammersmith Odeon in London (now the @EventimApollo).

Over to Will...

It was a Tuesday, I think.

Rushed back home after another school day insane, changed into stuff bought from the back pages of NME/MM.

Down to the train station. There were other fans there, they were older than me. I didn’t know them personally but had seen them around Friars - I tagged along discretely.

It was already late - I now fancifully think of it as the 5.15 but it was likely closer to 5.45.

I planned to get off at Marylebone and catch two tubes. Bad call, I was late. (The olden ones got off earlier, I didn’t).

And then finally there it was, the Hammersmith Odeon with the big sign outside. A lot of folk milling around still but I had no time to wait because they were not going in - they had no ticket? I had my cheap seat ticket. So far so good, no-one saw me. I was up in the balcony where I could see everything (very near where I would be again in 2002) the place was packed and expectant.

It felt like it started as soon as I arrived. I know now that I was too late to see Mike Garson (so I’m really really looking forward to his re-enactment of his part in that night in a couple of weeks) but I didn’t then. Instead, the familiar ditty ‘Ode to Joy’ was playing.

Memory is like a swinging door, isn’t it? Sometimes it can hit you on the nose.

My memory is one of being a tad overwhelmed.

Having been to Oxford Town in June, I fancied I knew what to expect in terms of spectacle and songs. In Oxford I was mesmerised by the costumes, the mimes, the sounds, the exquisite rawness of Mick, the steady backbeat of good old Woody the reliable beautifully understated Trevor. For me, these stars would live forever. (Not forgetting the saxes, flute, keyboards and backing vocals - a fabulous concoction of sounds to collocate our minds.)
