In news that will surprise absolutely nobody: almost 70 percent of people say their manager affects their mental health just as much as their partner.
A study of 3,400 respondents in 10 countries, by The Workforce Institute at UKG, also found that managers have a bigger impact on mental wellbeing than doctors or therapists. All of this makes perfect sense, of course: chances are you spend more time at work than with your partner, and – depending on your job – take a load of that work stress home with you.
According to the study, almost half of employees report being exhausted, and over 70 percent say work stress is damaging to their home life – and, by proxy, their performance at work. On top of stress negatively impacting people’s wellbeing, 62 percent say it “degrades their relationships."
While we should really be thinking about the individual when it comes to mental health, a happy employee is also good for business: 63 percent of respondents said they’re committed to work when they have positive mental health, while 80 percent said it makes them more energized.
