The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is located between mainland Mexico and the Baja California peninsula. It has around 37 islands that formed during a time of frequent volcanic activity. This beautiful body of water is home to migrating species such as the blue whale, shark whale, and humpback whale, along with other incredibly large and majestic creatures. The gulf is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, so many organizations work hard to preserve it. The Sea of Cortez is teeming with life, with over 2,000 species of marine life and more than 900 species of fish. Despite being one of the youngest seas in the world, it is one of the most biodiverse and vibrant bodies of water.
