HAMMERSMITH '73 - SARAH WAS THERE

“You know I’m smiling baby…”

Ahead of tomorrow’s 50th anniversary screening of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture at the original venue, the Hammersmith Odeon in London (now the @EventimApollo) and cinemas around the world (https://www.davidbowie.com/ziggy), long time Bowie fan, Sarah Atkinson, has shared her memories of the night Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust.

Sarah, the floor is yours...

I was there that night.

This was back in the days when you had to go to the box office to get tickets, dates were posted in music weeklies like the NME. So as soon as they came up for sale my friends took the train into London and queued overnight - they managed to get five-tickets, three third row in the middle, and two front-row to one side. I took one of those so that I would be as close to the stage as possible.

We arrived at the Hammersmith Odeon really early so that we wouldn’t miss anything. The documentary makers were talking to people in the queue, and in a 'blink and you’ll miss' it moment I appear in the film, you can catch the 14 year-old me in the recently posted trailer too. Immediately after the word 'RELIVE', that's me, no eyebrows and a big smile. We were interviewed by the filmmakers but being 14 and overexcited we said such stupid things it must have ended up on the cutting room floor.

The minute the concert started I was at the stage in the crush, but it didn't matter. I was overjoyed when Bowie fleetingly held my outstretched hand, he was singing Let’s Spend The Night Together at the time.

When he announced that this would be the last time he performed as Ziggy, we were all devastated.
