Rasheem Jenkins, grew up in Edenwald Houses, the largest public housing complex in the Bronx, in an apartment overlooking the basketball court that would eventually host Grenada Built to Win, which began its 11th season this June.

The program is free for players, who are mostly boys ranging from elementary school to high school age (some years, including this one, have included girls’ divisions). Volunteers raise money and spread the word on social media; this season, 22 workers paid by the city’s Summer Youth Employment Program will come aboard to operate the game clock, keep score and clean up.

The court, once neglected, has become a source of life for Edenwald. Old friends connect on the sidelines as residents gather to watch the games over a burger or a plate of jerk chicken and coconut rice.

The core of Jenkins’s ambition lies in a will to address something often left unspoken. “We’ve all got trauma coming from the projects,” he said. The goal of Grenada Built to Win is to “correct some of that trauma.”
