But this coastal enclave has an outsize role in the state’s history. Settled as a military fort and mission in the 1780s during the Spanish conquest of Alta California, the city and its surroundings have markers of its past everywhere, like Indigenous Chumash cave paintings and its adobe Presidio, a former Spanish fortress, which is now a historic park downtown. Graced by fragrant climbing jasmine, purple-blossomed jacaranda and views of the dramatic Santa Ynez mountains, Santa Barbara looks almost too good for its age. It has some new high-profile additions, though, in recent years, including MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, which is a curious child’s dream with its rooftop garden devoted to rambunctious water play.
