Video by @jenniferhayesig | Multiple tiger sharks glide past us in the Bahama Banks. The Bahamas became a shark sanctuary in 2011, joining a growing list of countries that recognize the value of protecting sharks versus harvesting them for the fin trade. Shark populations around the world have plummeted from overfishing. They’ve become ghosts on reef systems where we used to encounter them on every dive. Studies show that sharks play a key role in stabilizing marine ecosystems—and stable ecosystems are more resilient to impacts. Places like the Bahamas, Palau, Maldives, French Polynesia, Cayman Islands, and others recognize that healthy shark populations are valuable for the economy and the environment, and they’ve committed to protecting sharks in their waters. We’re happy when we encounter sharks—it means we’re in the presence a healthy marine ecosystem. Follow @jenniferhayesig for more stories about the creatures we share our planet with.
