What can you do?” Andrew Marantz asks, in a new profile of Leah Hunt-Hendrix, who has spent her life attempting to figure out the answer. Hunt-Hendrix is both a granddaughter to one of America’s richest oil tycoons—for many years, her grandfather was the richest person in the country—and an active member of leftist social movements. She has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for left-populist politicians, including Cori Bush and Maxwell Frost, participated in Occupy Wall Street, and gave early funding to Black Lives Matter activists. At the same time, Hunt-Hendrix doesn’t think she needs to give away everything in order to pursue her activism. She aspires to live as “a mean between two extremes,” she told Marantz, who witnessed as she booked an impromptu Mediterranean vacation and was invited to her luxury New York City penthouse. Hunt-Hendrix’s Maltipoo is named after Malcolm X, which seemed to embarrass her. “She has better politics than anyone else who’s that rich, and she’s better at fund-raising than anyone else with her politics,” said Max Berger, who worked on Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign in 2020.
