Today is #MoominsDay – and we couldn’t help but notice an uncanny resemblance between the beloved children’s characters and this adorable chess piece! ♟
@ムーミン are the creation of Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson, who was born #OnThisDay in 1914 🗓
Meanwhile, this chess piece pre-dates the first appearance of the Moomins by about 1000 years!
Decorated with two whimsical animal heads, it was probably used as a rook or a bishop during gameplay.
🔎 Animal-headed chess piece. Whalebone, from Dorset in the UK, around 900–1000 AD.
