I’ve been painting for a year now and typically I approach everything casually, but recently I’ve asked family members what I can make for them and the requests have invited me to step WAY outside of my comfort zone. ⁣

These are 5 ahas I had while painting a rainbow tree for the first time: ⁣
⁣
➡️ 1. Making something as a gift for someone else can turn into AN EVENT! ⁣
⁣
For my sweet baby sister @paigecarlylehoward, I wanted to paint a rainbow tree 🌈 And of course, I had epic aspirations. (Whenever I have the chance to express how much someone means to me, naturally expectations go through the roof.) I had no idea how to start, but It. Was. Happening. ⁣
⁣
➡️ 2. Facing the blank page with no idea where to start? Research. ⁣
⁣
For me, I use research as a way to understand what inspires me and I follow those clues. Recently, I’ve followed those clues to 2 very different places: my local library where I can check out their extensive collection of art books. And Instagram:) I love the online watercolor community where countless professional artists generously share their techniques and tips.⁣

For this rainbow tree, I followed @andrea.nelson.art’s tutorial step by step, so thank you Andrea for making it so easy! (Follow Andrea for inspiration for simple, beautiful, and therapeutic projects. My favorites are when she does neurographic art.)⁣

➡️ 3. Embrace the power of “a study” (an artsy way of saying “do a rehearsal run”)⁣

Doing this helps me feel more secure in my plan before going forward with the larger piece; it also allows me to see what I wanted to capture… and avoid. ⁣

➡️ 4. Enjoy creative curiosities that sneak up on you as you age. It could be photography or cooking, gardening or bird-watching… whatever it is, if it brings you happiness, OWN IT! ⁣
⁣
It doesn’t have to earn you money to be worth your efforts. Being able to set time aside to be creative is a privilege, but that doesn’t mean you should feel guilty. And if you do feel guilty, create something as a “gift” for someone else. You’ll feel less selfish;) Trust me.⁣
⁣
➡️ 5. (inspired by my little sister) “Rainbow” is a color. It may be the best one.
