In 2017 I went to Bidibidi in Uganda with the pitch that it was one of the world's biggest refugee settlements. Three weeks later I was back in Washington, D.C., mostly showing pictures of bedsheets. When South Sudanese refugees arrived in Uganda, they carried their possessions wrapped in embroidered sheets called milayas that have been passed down for generations. Setting up studios with the families in Bidibidi, we collected their testimonies, and the response was huge. So many readers asked how to support the women and how to purchase their beautiful work. A nonprofit organization emerged out of the National Geographic article I photographed with writer Nina Strochlic: The Milaya Project features women who make ornately embroidered pillowcases and other textiles in the traditional patterns.
