A meaningful portrait arises out of so many of layers of personal history, interest, circumstances and relationships, that it’s pointless to try to define it. Everybody’s interesting. It all depends who’s looking, how and why.”⁠ ⁠ The Adventures of Guille and Belinda is Alessandra Sanguinetti’s intimate portrait of Guillermina and Belinda, two cousins living in rural Argentina, as they move through childhood and youth towards womanhood. ⁠ ⁠ Throughout the series, Sanguinetti pays special attention to the evolution of themes of play and performance, girlhood, love, family and animals, all mirrored by the landscape and laced with intermittent visions of the future. We also see the theme of transition, witnessed in the lives of the series’ subjects, their relationship with the photographer and Sanguinetti’s own perspectives on her craft. ⁠ ⁠ Sanguinetti published the project in 2010 in the photobook The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams. In 2020, she followed up with the sequel The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer, which expands on the first volume by focusing on the girls’ journey into womanhood. ⁠ ⁠ Sanguinetti’s work is on show as part of the group exhibition Close Enough at @hangar.photoartcenter in Brussels, Belgium, until December 16.⁠ ⁠ PHOTOS (left to right):⁠ ⁠ (1) Ophelias.
