“Today, the situation is very bad.”
That was the assessment of a Ukrainian deputy commander named Yevgen early in the morning of Aug. 9, when a photographer with The New York Times captured this image of soldiers from the 95th Air Assault Brigade.
In a wooded area on the front lines of Donbas, Ukrainian soldiers came out from concealment to shell Russian forces. Spent charges littering the forest floor told the story. But the Russians rained their own explosives onto the area.
Earlier that morning, Ukrainian drones spotted bunkers and other targets at Russian positions beyond the tree line. Soldiers readied a recoilless rifle and got to work.
@tylerhicksphoto has been photographing the war in Ukraine since it began in February 2022. A month after he captured this image, Hicks reflected on the experience and broke down what happened after this image was captured. Tap the link in our bio to read the full story.
