Artist Alma Thomas was inspired by this astronomical event when she created this 1970 painting, “The Eclipse.” In a total eclipse, the Moon blocks the view of the Sun from Earth, resulting in a ring of light. In Thomas’ piece, the warm colors of the sun burst out from behind the cool tones representing the Moon, creating a bright halo.   The last total solar eclipse was on August 21, 2017. The next total solar eclipse is April 8, 2024.
