‘It is stories and people I like to preserve and, even more, to elevate them to the uniqueness a print can hold for me.’ – Liz Johnson Artur

After joining the Black Lives Matter protests in her neighbourhood of Peckham Rye in south-east London, photographer Liz Johnson Artur was motivated to photograph BLM protests in Vauxhall, Westminster and Trafalgar Square. She has said that, for her, ‘Time Don’t Run Here’ is a work about London as much as it is about the people she depicts. Artur decided to print the work on pages from braille editions of two novels she collected: Iris Murdoch’s ‘The Red and The Green’ and John Harris’s ‘Ride out the Storm: A Novel of Dunkirk’, both of which contain references to difference, conflict and resistance.

Artur reflected, ‘It was crucial for me to give those people their reference in time in a physical way, this is why I printed the photographs. I hope they can see themselves as part of this important moment in British history.’ The artwork forms part of what Artur calls her Black Balloon Archive. She has been making this vast ongoing body of work since the 1990s, depicting people in Africa, and of the African and Caribbean diasporas. Examples from the Archive can be seen in Artur’s free Tate Modern display.

In response to Artur’s ‘Time Don’t Run Here’, Lou Mensah of @shade_podcast and audio artist @axelkacoutie created ‘Interludes: Black Balloons’, a soundscape that features the voices of @lizjohnsonartur, artists @imogen.faires and @firstsonofsoil from Theatre Peckham, and Interpretation Artist Resident, @marie_elaina_. Originally performed live at Tate Modern in April 2023, you can now listen to the entire soundscape on our website.
