Widely considered one of the 20th century's self-taught masters of drawing, Ramírez produced approximately 450 known drawings and collages during the 15 years he spent as a psychiatric inmate at DeWitt State Hospital in Auburn, California. Ramírez's work is characterized by intricate, densely layered drawings that often featured trains, tunnels, and horses, reflecting his personal experiences and memories. Thanks to the encouragement of Tarmo Pasto, an artist and psychology professor at Sacramento State College, Ramírez was soon given a dedicated workspace.
