On Saturday, Palestinian militants, led by Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, rampaged through southern Israeli communities, spraying bullets at motorists and passersby, attacking a desert rave, raiding civilian homes and military bases, and kidnapping Israeli soldiers and civilians. The Israeli Army retaliated with a series of air strikes across Gaza; as of Sunday, the area has effectively become a war zone.

Before the start of the weekend, Yoni Asher, a 37-year-old real-estate consultant from Ganot Hadar, a community in central Israel, had said goodbye to his wife, Doron, and their daughters, Raz, who is four, and Aviv, who is two. They had gone to southern Israel to visit Doron’s mother’s house. But early Saturday morning, news surfaced that his mother-in-law’s community had been infiltrated by Palestinian militants. The militants had discovered his wife and daughters, along with his mother-in-law, and taken them hostage. “I’ll leave no rock unturned until we’re reunited,” Asher told Adam Rasgon.
