In February, 2022, @ian_urbina asked the documentary filmmaker @edouphoto to join him at sea, boarding Chinese squid ships. China has the world’s largest distant-water fishing fleet, catching billions of pounds of seafood annually, the biggest portion of it squid; the fleet is rife with labor trafficking, abusive working conditions, and violence. Urbina was working on a reported feature about the environmental and human-rights record of the fleet. Ou’s film “Squid Fleet” captured something different, combining fictionalized narration with real footage from the trip to capture a strange world that few outsiders get to see. “Our goal was not only to convey information but also to capture the complex motivations of the fishermen,” Ou’s co-director, @willnmiller, said.
