This shows the approach up to the Devils Thumb, and our camp situation. First pic is a @renan_ozturk drone pic of @トミー・コールドウェル and me hiking up the ice falls below the Thumb. The second is my scrappy iPhone pic of our tents at sunset (there’s a reason I’m not the pro…).
It was interesting visiting the Thumb - it’s way, way more melted out than anything we’d seen in pictures. Part of that is because we were there in late season, but part of it is that the glaciers have receded an incredible amount. As an example, the previous party who did the DT traverse recounted a simple, 45min snow romp from camp over to the start of the climbing. We did 2 hours of navigating rock fins and ridges that have all emerged as the ice has retreated in the last 10+ years.
This is part of the reason that any real climber is at least some kind of environmental advocate - it’s so easy to visually see how quickly the world is changing in the big mountains. It’s a bit sobering.
