The Decisive Moment 💥

Mythological in its magnitude, the decisive moment was a signature tenet of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s (@fondationhcb) work, yet its essence cannot be truly defined. Emphasizing the coalescence of form, visual harmony and significance of events in time, its influence has prevailed through generations of Magnum photographers.

Taken over 90 years ago, Cartier-Bresson’s capture of a man jumping over a puddle laid a new foundation in photographic perspective, giving prominence to his instinctive image-making approach.

In an image from Trent Parke’s (@chillioctopus) photobook Monument, where light battles dark in a dystopian vision of mankind, a line of city dwellers stand eclipsed by shadows from another plane.

A Sevillan dancer’s skirt whirls fluidly across the frame in a demonstration of form in motion, taken by Inge Morath in 1987.

Two images featured in this selection will be available to purchase as signed or estate-stamped 6x6" prints in the upcoming Square Print Sale, in partnership with @worldpressphoto, launching on Monday, October 16.
