On this day 65 years ago, the first ever evening auction took place at Sotheby’s in London. Featuring works from the Jakob Goldschmidt collection, the sale on 15 October, 1958, transformed the traditional auction into a glamorous event—televised and invite-only. The dress code? Ball gowns for the ladies and dinner jackets for the men, of course.

One of the top lots of the night, Paul Cezanne’s ‘Garçon au Gilet Rouge’, set off a bidding battle and a new world record for an artwork at auction, ultimately won by the American collector Paul Mellon. The work was later donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where it still resides.
