Words by Becky Hale @beckythale | In order for this conceptual image to illustrate the idea of brainless clones for the National Geographic “Gory Details” bookazine, I used an unusual technique, all in-camera. We knew we needed the perfect head and immediately thought of our staff artist, Fernando G. Baptista. I didn’t want his face to be recognizable, so I rim-lit him with moody green strobes. First, I zoomed in all the way on his head, then opened the shutter and fired the strobe. Without closing the shutter, I zoomed out a little, fired the strobe a second time; zoomed out more, fired the strobe a third time; and finally zoomed out all the way and fired the strobe a fourth time, then closed the shutter. This resulted in a single image with four different-size images of Fernando’s head.
