Video by @estherhorvath | A sea angel swims in an aquarium aboard the research vessel Polarstern during an Arctic expedition. The enigmatic Clione limacina was caught with a net attached to an ROV about 10 meters (3 ft) under the sea ice, allowing scientists to observe the species. Sea angels are protandric hermaphrodites—they start life as males and can morph into females later in life for reproductive advantage. They feed almost exclusively on the shellfish known as sea butterflies. Sea angels use tentacles in their mouths to grab prey and search for the shell opening—where they use special hooks to pull out the body of the prey. Sea angels also have the extraordinary ability to survive for a year without food. Please follow me @estherhorvath for more polar science stories.
