For more than 50 years, it has been home to many families of magicians, snake charmers, acrobats, singers, dancers, actors, healers, and traditional musicians, and most notably, Rajasthani Kathputli puppeteer artists. This makes it the largest community of street performers in India. The colony began to expand in the 1950s as a cluster of makeshift tents in an open field on the outskirts of Delhi, set up by itinerant Rajasthani puppeteers who gave the colony its name. In the following decades, street performers from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra also settled there. Today, it is a prime real estate area surrounded by Mayapuri and Naraina.
