A new six-month investigation from @katherine_eban reveals a nearly decade-long trail of warnings issued by the Department of Energy to other government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, regarding the risk that US-funded biology research could be misused by overseas partners.

In mid-2019, an Energy Department official went so far as to issue a specific warning to an adviser at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) about the coronavirus research the agency was funding at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. By October 2020, DOE scientists had linked the pandemic’s origins to the WIV.
